The Walkers in St. Louis

We met Paul's brother Alan and his family in St. Louis for a weekend. We went to the St. Louis Arch and decided to go to the top. I began to get a little nervous when I saw the size of the door that would lead to our "pod" ride up to the top.
And when the doors opened and I saw we would be riding in a tiny space taken straight from Mork from Ork, I began breathing a little more rapidly. I was not excited.
Emilyanne, Claire's cousin, rode up in the pod with us.
Even Rachel looked a bit nervous.
Once you finally got to the top, it was pretty crowded up there also, but the views were pretty amazing. The sides leaned out a little so you kind of leaned on your belly to look out.
This is the Mississippi River below still high, but no longer flooding this street.
Views of St. Louis.

The way back down, I was a little more prepared, knowing what to expect for the ride.Claire, Mommy, Rachel and Leilani ready to descend.

At the bottom of the arch there is a museum focusing on settling westward. There are a few displays where they have statues that move and talk. Claire was a little scared of them at first, but strangely fascinated. She kept wanting to go back.
Claire loved the museum, while Rachel just loved being out of the car and out of her stroller.
I got a kick out of the signs in the museum. At least they decided not to be boring.

Claire loved the horses in the museum.
Claire next to the arch. The shiny silver metal exterior gets pretty hot during the day.

Paul gave Claire a lift so she could see the Mississippi River which was flooding the street below.

We visited the science museum, which was a great place for the kids to play. They loved it!

Claire, Elisabeth and another museum visitor tried out the padded car.
Everyone took their turn. Rachel looks like her cousin Benjamin is taking her for a wild ride.
Claire must be a bit safer driver.
There was a bridge in the museum that crossed a freeway and there were holes you could look down to watch the cars drive underneath. I don't know who enjoyed this part more - Paul or the kids.

Claire tried to climb one of the poles in the museum....

but didn't have much success.
Rachel loved the people painted on the walls that were just her size.

The girls found all kinds of things to climb on and play on. This floor was slanted, so they used it as a slide.
There were lots of puzzles and games to try and Rachel was always willing to help Claire out.
They had lots of snakes and lizards to pet and Claire was not a bit afraid to touch them all.
A bit cautious maybe when they came toward her, but not afraid.
Claire and Paul check out how big the T-Rex is.

The museum wiped Rachel (and me) out. I just wish I had a stroller to conk out in.
Elisabeth, Claire and Emilyanne wanted a close look at everything.
I love watching the big cats, though this is as close as I ever want to be to one.
Claire and Emilyanne.
Claire was sure this bear was just a cute teddy bear.
Good bye St. Louis!

On our last day visiting with Alan & Lisa's family, we drove to Cahokia Indian Mounds. It was a pretty interesting place to see. As you can tell, Claire was a bit sad to be leaving her cousins.
Rachel dutifully studied the information...

..then reported back to us.

You could see the St. Louis skyline including the arch from the top of the mounds.
Rachel enjoyed the scenery for only so long and and then wanted some more exciting things to do.
Always the movie star.
The cousins together before parting ways. Rachel, Emilyanne, Claire, Elisabeth, Leilani and Benjamin.
